Track: Chronic Pain Management in ENT

Chronic pain in ENT (ear, nose, and throat) conditions can significantly affect a patient's quality of life. ENT-related chronic pain often results from long-term conditions like sinusitis, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, or throat and ear issues. Managing this pain requires a multidisciplinary approach involving pharmacological treatments, physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and sometimes surgical interventions.
Chronic Sinusitis
Chronic sinusitis can cause ongoing pain and pressure in the face, head, and sinuses. Management typically involves nasal corticosteroids, saline irrigation, and decongestants to reduce inflammation and improve sinus drainage. In severe cases, endoscopic sinus surgery may be considered to remove blockages and improve sinus ventilation.
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders
TMJ disorders can lead to jaw pain, headaches, and facial discomfort, often worsened by clenching or grinding teeth. Chronic pain management includes pain relievers, muscle relaxants, and physical therapy. Behavioral therapy, nightguards, and surgical procedures like arthrocentesis or joint replacement may also be used for severe cases.
Otitis Media and Chronic Ear Pain
Chronic ear infections or conditions like otitis media can cause persistent pain and hearing loss. Management may include antibiotics or steroid ear drops to treat infection and inflammation. Surgical options, such as myringotomy (ear tube insertion), can be used for recurrent ear infections.
Laryngeal Pain
Chronic throat pain can result from conditions like laryngitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or throat cancer. Treatment involves acid-suppressing medications for GERD, voice rest, and speech therapy. For cancer-related pain, a combination of surgery, radiation, and pain control strategies is used.
Neuropathic Pain
Neuropathic pain in ENT conditions, such as trigeminal neuralgia (facial nerve pain), can be severe and difficult to treat. Treatment options include anticonvulsants like carbamazepine, nerve blocks, and surgical interventions like microvascular decompression.
